We want you to start this Turkish food tour with an empty tummy. Firstly we will visit the Karakoy area which was the financial heartland and is now home to trendy cafes bars and restaurants. We will then take the Karakoy – Tunel funicular (the second oldest underground after London’s tube) before stopping to sample some Borek, a flaky pastry filled with cheese, meat or potato and accompanied by a nice cup of tea. You could also sample Ayran which is a salty yoghurt drink and very refreshing on a hot summers day.
Sated for now we’ll wander along Istiklal street stopping to taste a Maras ice –cream. This ice cream is unique in that it never melts. Onto Hazzopulo Arcade famous for its neo classical architecture where we’ll stop for a Turkish tea or coffee.
We’ll then wander the back streets of Pera and stop at a Pickle shop. The Turks love pickles and believe it staves off flu and colds in Winter. We can also stop at a Midye cart which sells Fried Mussels.
We’ll pass by the Fish market before entering Nevizade , a popular night time haunt in Istanbul. We’ll choose a Meyhane and taste a few Meze dishes and the Turkish national drink Raki. Soak in the atmosphere of a typical meyhane and listen to typical Meyhane music. Wander back down Istiklal Street where’ll we’ll find a coffee house and learn to play Tavla (Turkish backgammon).
